The final tourism numbers from the 2011 calendar year were released late last week by the Mauritian government to mixed reviews. On the positive side, the island saw a growth of 3.1% over 2010 with more than 964,000 visitors coming in. On the other hand, it was lower than the forecast growth which had hoped to see 980,000 arrivals. Government officials blamed the lower-than-expected numbers on a still sluggish European economy.
