Anytime an industry relies on custom machinery, it relies on condition monitoring for superior maintenance. This primary process permits maintenance workers to check for any issues that might exist and resolve them before they can result in an incident. Since there are several different types of equipment used by so many different industries, this particular process also comes in a large variety of forms. Each individual process was designed with the intention of extending the life of equipment and keeping operators out of harm's way. You can find these processes in use in a number of different working conditions, many of which can be quite dangerous.

Vibration analysis is the first and most standard type of this type of monitoring. Measuring the degree of vibration that is emitted by a piece of machinery can be done with the help of sensors that will take the measurements and provide data to maintenance personnel. The individuals in charge of this process can utilize the data they receive to analyze the amount of vibrations that are occurring and provide a great deal of insight as to how the machine is operating and what problems might exist within it.

Visual inspection is another method of condition monitoring, though it is far less advanced and can sometimes be less of a science then the detailed pinpoint accuracy of vibration analysis. Since it comes with the risk of human error, it is best coupled with more advanced processes. This sort of inspection requires a good pair of eyes and a great deal of understanding about the machine in question, because there are usually a great deal of minor details that can be overlooked and lead to major problems.

Yet another method, which works by comparing an existing machine's status to an ideal model, is known as performance analysis. Machine owners use this process to figure out how much an older model is costing them in time and productivity and when they start shopping around for a new one. Even the best maintained machines will gradually wear out over time and cost more money to maintain while producing less money through a gradual decline in productivity, so it is good to know when it is costing more than it's worth.

All industries wherein machines such as motors, turbines, and centrifugal pumps are commonly used should invest in some sort of condition monitoring in order to ensure efficiency and safety. The best way to prevent accidents or breakdowns is to predict them, which is the reason that so many companies put time and money in accurately predicting the rate of deterioration for their machinery. As time passes, many more advanced methods become possible, so each new machine that a company purchases will be much more sustainable than the last.
