Physical therapists are professionals in the healthcare field who treat and diagnose those with problems that can limit their abilities to move around or to perform functional activities as they would typically do. On the other hand, physical therapist assistants assist physical therapists with their job. Some people would rather become a physical therapist assistant and not a physical therapist because of the shorter study duration and the cheaper tuition fees needed to become a physical therapist assistant.
First of all, you should know what a physical therapist assistant mainly does. They help physical therapists with their daily activities which are mainly assisting the patients during rehabilitation. You will be trained to conduct therapeutic exercises, provide therapeutic massages, observe patients and evaluate data on a patient's progress. You will also have to learn the mechanism of supportive devices such as leg braces or crutches. Other than that, you have to be prepared to perform clerical duties such as answering phones, ordering supplies and completing forms.
Another important point to note is that a job as a physical therapist assistant is not a stepping stone towards becoming a physical therapist since the training provided is different. Moreover, you only need an associate's degree in physical therapist assisting while you must have at least a master's degree to become a physical therapist. However, if you decide to become a physical therapist after becoming a physical therapist assistant, you may take an accredited physical therapist assistant to physical therapist program.
Now that you know what the job entails, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to accept the responsibilities that come with the job. You will have to listen to your physical therapist, so you have to make sure that you are willing to take directions from them. You must also help patients with their exercise and provide massages, baths and other treatments if they are required. This means that you have to be keen towards helping patients since this is mainly what this job is about. It is a plus if you are strong and patient since this job can be physically and emotionally draining. Learn to communicate with your patients clearly as your patients depend on your instructions while carrying out their exercises.
In conclusion, to become a physical therapist assistant consumes lesser time and money as compared to becoming a physical therapist. Your main job will be assisting the physical therapists in their job; mainly assisting the patients during rehabilitation. Expect to work evening and weekend hours as it is required in this line of work. Also, start exercising to be stronger to assist the patients better. Always keep in mind that this job is not an easy ride and you will need to work hard for it.
