In the age of blogging and Internet forums and commenting, everyone has a voice. Or at least, everyone can voice their opinion no matter how irrelevant it sometimes seems. Everyone is more than entitled to their opinion, just as am I. But I come from the thought process that if you're going to write a blog or comment on a music video, it should have some purpose or meaning behind it. Don't comment on a YouTube video simply saying "This song sucks." Why don't you write why you don't enjoy it, in clean language please.
The same applies for blogging. I find it almost amusing that I know many, many people who, for years, have claimed to hate writing. They dreaded English class in school. They spend more time reading magazines and video game walkthroughs than novels. But they have an opinion or they think they are an expert on a subject and they want to share it with the world. However, people forget that just because you know a lot about a subject or you feel you can contribute something to the blogging world does not mean you can write well. The keyword there is "well." Everyone can write but that by no means implies people want to read what you have to say.
The blogging world is wonderful in that it can give more people a voice. In this big world, the "little guys" finally have a voice and a chance to make it. So many people want to share there voice and some really shouldn't. That does not imply you do not have something important to say. Instead, it's that you might not have the skills to express those thoughts in the written word. The blogging world is so incredibly inundated with terrible written blogs that is reflects very poorly on those who can write. Bloggers are not taken seriously at all because of it. In order to be a published novelists, you have to crawl through the trenches just to have your work looked at by a publisher, who will then tear it to shreds and turn it into gold. But anyone with Internet access can sign up on WordPress and start typing.
The thought that anyone can start a blog diminishes the quality of writing drastically. Not many people wake up one day and decide they want to be a novelist, but that often seems the sentiment with blogging. Blogging is still a form of writing and if you have no experience or skill in writing, why degrade the market? It now takes people that much longer to sift through the garbage to find the hidden treasures. Leave the blogging up to people who have both something interesting to share with the world and can form a sentence without a dangling participle.
