Once you've been diagnosed with a vision problem and have been prescribed corrective lenses, you must decide what you want to wear on your eyes to correct the problem. Glasses are often their first thought, but many people end up turning to contact lenses instead, or switching between the two. At first, the thought of inserting a contact lens directly onto your eyeball may seem a little creepy, but once that initial fear is overcome many people actually prefer contacts for several different reasons. The reasons to wear contact lenses may vary from person to person, but the main reasons are usually similar.

Wearing contact lenses enables people who need corrective lenses to feel as though they don't need anything at all. Contacts allow for a natural look with no restrictions from glasses frames and so everyone can see their eyes clearly. For some people, wearing contacts allows everyone else to see them as they were meant to be seen. Some of the physical aspects of wearing glasses are another reason that some people choose to wear contacts. Glasses can squeeze the sides of your head or your nose, and have a tendency to fog up when it's humid or collect raindrops when it's raining. With contacts, you also don't have to worry about frames impeding your vision in any way. Not only is the look more natural, but also your vision is also more natural. The frames don't disturb your peripheral vision, and you won't have to look through any portion of the frame during your day-to-day activities.

While better overall vision is the main reason to wear contact lenses, there are certain lifestyle elements that make many people lean that way in the first place. Wearing sunglasses is much easier while wearing contact lenses because you can just slide on a regular pair right over the contacts. It's also easier and more convenient to play sports while wearing contacts, and you can even change the color of your eyes, if you so desire. The fashion elements of wearing glasses will also cease to be an issue when you wear contact lenses. Some people like to have a pair of glasses for every type of occasion, and with contacts this isn't necessary.

Obviously, wearing contact lenses requires a bit of everyday maintenance and the risk of eye infection is greater if you don't take care of them properly, but that is up to you. You're not likely to run into any problems if you follow the care instructions for your contacts. If you like the reasons to wear contacts but are still on the fence, all you can really do is give them a try and see if you think they'll fit into your lifestyle.

Soft contacts are generally more comfortable than rigid or hard contacts, but the hard contacts are usually a little easier to care for. You can usually find deals for cheap contacts that still work the same as the pricier ones. Of course, not all cheap contacts will give the same quality, so be wary when you're looking. Just ask your eye doctor to go over the possibilities with you and he will offer recommendations if you decide to try them out.
