One of the primary concerns that many people have when going on vacation is the prospect of being robbed while they're away. Even pricey vacation packages and all inclusive vacations aren't a guarantee that nothing can happen while you're gone. Crime is a consideration in every country, no matter if you're on a cheap vacation or expensive one, in a fancy resort or walking around a busy city street. Regardless of the vacations packages you look through and choose, follow some important tips while you're away so you can avoid being a victim of crime and enjoy your stay.

Do a little bit of research about the place you're going before you sign up for any vacation packages. Ask about the local customs and find out if there are any specific safety issues you should consider. If you love the night life, but the place you want to go advises against going out at night, you may want to consider a different destination. It's always a good idea to leave prized possessions like jewelry and some brand name clothing at home. The details of the vacation packages may give you the information you need about what not to pack, or you can ask your travel agent. Basically, you don't want to stand out or draw attention to yourself when traveling in some foreign countries.

Adding some extras to your luggage may also help to keep your belongings safe while you're on vacation. Cable locks, zipper locks and other safety devices can help to keep anyone from tearing open your luggage and getting inside. You won't be able to apply locks to your luggage during the flight, but you can outfit your bags with them once you pick up your bags after you land. It's also a good idea to make copies of important documents like your passport, reservation information and credit cards. Give the copies to a family member or friend before you leave on your trip. Travel insurance is also a good idea whether you like cheap vacations, expensive vacations or something in between.

It's important to always be aware of your surroundings while you're on vacation in any country. Vacation packages won't advise you to stay alert and not to let your guard down, but it is important. That's not to say you shouldn't relax and enjoy yourself, but knowing where you are and what to expect will reduce your chances of someone trying to take your stuff.

Keep your money and important information close to your body at all times, such as in a fanny pack worn in the front or the inside pocket of a jacket. If you do end up bringing any valuables on your vacation, you may want to ask the hotel if a safe is available for you to use. Also, be sure to take advantage of all the locks on your door, and even jam a rubber door stop under the door if there is one in your room. Asking for a room that's away from stairways or elevators will reduce the amount of foot traffic that goes by your room.
