The home wind turbine comes in many forms. A very popular way to get one up and running now is to buy it in kit form.

Although there are a number of products out there that you can choose from, a super easy way and super cheap way to get started is to buy one that has modular components that you can install after assembling the device yourself.

The classic way of getting a wind turbine up and running has been to purchase one from a dealer and let them install it. That is perfectly fine with much larger systems that go on towers. Those usually require a technician and probably an electrician and a lot more complexity than will be the case with a home wind turbine.

As the market for home wind turbine products comes into its own, more and more devices out there or coming in modular or kit form. What a kit means for you as a consumer is that you don't have to do all of the work but you have to do some of the work.

These are the steps that are involved and setting up your own wind turbine at home…

First you have to make a study of the microclimate, or wind signature where you are planning to install the home wind turbine. You've got to do this before you begin.

Then, you have to decide what type of turbine you're going to get. The most popular types are horizontal and vertical.

Lastly, you have to install the device. This is where the kit comes in.

By purchasing a kit versus purchasing a ready-made wind turbine from a manufacturer, you have several advantages. The main advantage is that you're cutting way down your cost by doing some simple assembly.

What you'll likely be required to do is put together the various subcomponents, such as the rotor blades and the motor hub, and then install the device on some type of stand or tower.

By going this route you could cut up to 40% out of the cost of the wind turbine you. You do need some mechanical aptitude to be able do this, but really no more than that of the average home handyman.

Concluding, the home wind turbine is coming cheaper and cheaper because of shortcut devices like kits. While you don't have to go this route, it is just a lot less expensive if you have this is an alternative. You take a little bit of time and save a lot of money with the kit.
