Residential Wind Generators: Exactly Why Do They Cost So Much?

Residential wind turbines can be very expensive or they can be very cheap. What drives the cost though is a combination of factors that are very interesting to learn about.

Shrinking international oil supplies and the controversy over nuclear energy have caused us to have to consider purchasing devices to make power at home a lot more seriously. There's just no way to get around this and unless we find a Mr. Nuclear type device that can easily and cheaply make almost unlimited supplies of energy for homes. That doesn't seem to be on the horizon so it is good to understand what the pricing differences are between various wind turbine types.

Materials that these devices are made out of can have a big influence on how much the cost. Depending on whether the material is composite or made out of metal can have a big influence on the eventual cost.

Another factor is whether the wind turbine is of the vertical or of the horizontal variety. Horizontal wind turbines are a lot cheaper because they are mass-produced and been on the market for quite a while. Vertical wind turbines are a lot more expensive because they tend to be purchased by urban consumers and installed in locations where they need to be aesthetically pleasing.

Therefore, they cost a lot more because there is a lot more aesthetic design put into them than the horizontal variety. The horizontal kind of residential wind turbines are not unattractive however. Instead, they are just not intended to blend in with the natural surroundings like a vertical wind device is.

Another factor in cost is where the wind turbine kits are manufactured. The ones that are built in China are much cheaper than the ones built in the United States, obviously. The ones in China get to take advantage of the tremendously low labor rate there as well as Chinese government incentives for manufacturing that we do not typically have in the United States in such a profound way.

Lastly, maybe the biggest factor that can influence the cost of such residential wind device is marketing in the market position of the manufacturer. Ones that have positioned themselves as market leaders feel they can charge a lot more and get the price that they ask.

In summary, the residential wind turbines that we are all familiar with can be very expensive but they can also be much less expensive depending on where you buy them and from whom you buy them from. Let the buyer beware. All devices are not made the same and all very well could though produce the same amount of energy at your home.
