There are several varieties of wind turbine kits you can look at for your home. The two most popular types are the horizontal axis wind turbine and the vertical axis wind turbine.

The advantages of the horizontal wind turbine kits are:

Work best in high winds - this is probably the greatest strengths of the horizontal wind turbine. It is really designed to find the best wind by using its tail section to direct the rotor blades into the best or optimal direction. Therefore, wind turbine kits that have a horizontal alignment are best suited for high wind environments located at least 30 feet above the tree line.

Cheaper - these units have been on the market the longest and they are by far the majority of the ones out in the field today. It is a classic design and resembles the windmills that you find in the Netherlands. While it is not very aesthetically pleasing, it is simple to set up and very inexpensive to purchase and install.

The advantages of vertical wind turbine kits are:

Work in turbulent wind conditions best - the vertical wind turbine is perfect for a turbulent environment because it handles chaotic wind conditions the best. There is no tail section to direct the wind turbine into the path of the oncoming strongest wind, so therefore, it is free to move as the wind so directs - making it more efficient as winds shift from one direction to the other.

Better on roofs - not only is the vertical device more aesthetically pleasing, but it is also better suited for environment like that are found on the roof. The reason is that it has a small form factor. It fits a lot better in an urban environment too because it is just not so noticeable.

If you're out in the country somewhere, it really doesn't matter though. You can have a horizontal wind turbine that is most efficient that is mounted 100 feet in the air and take advantage of the strongest wind and therefore, make the most electricity. But in an urban environment, wind turbine kits are going to perform the best if they are of the vertical kind because there's a lot less neighborhood resistance to using that type of device.

While certainly both wind turbine kits will work at your home, you need to assess your particular situation and decide which fits your wind conditions the best before making a choice for your particular house.
